Chapter 29

Becky returned to the dining room table and answered a few more of the policeman’s questions.

Then she had some for him.

“So, what happens now?”

“Well, the transport van is already on its way here. It’s from the county coroner’s office. They’ll wait outside until the doctor finishes his assessment.”

“His assessment? How long does it take to look at the poor woman and determine she’s dead?”

“That part will take only a minute. But he’ll do a preliminary investigation to try to determine whether an autopsy is in order.”

“Meaning what? What kind of investigation? Detective Woodard already said it wasn’t a homicide.”

“He said it doesn’t appear to be. In all likelihood it was natural causes. The doctor will look around and see if he can find the phone number for her doctor. He’ll look at any medications he finds around the house with her name on them. He’ll make a determination whether the medicines interact adversely with each other. Sometimes two pills that are both good for you can be very harmful for you when taken together.

“If he can get ahold of her doctor, he’ll ask the doctor about her medical history. Whether she had heart disease or cancer. Whether she had any previous heart attacks or strokes. Any conditions that made it difficult to breathe. Those sorts of things.

“The doctor will decide whether further investigation is necessary. If he determines it is, the body will be transported to the coroner’s office for an autopsy and toxicology tests. If they do an autopsy and find anything suspicious that Detective Woodard didn’t see, they’ll advise him and he’ll open a homicide investigation. If they find evidence of suicide, say an overdose of pills, then they’ll contact him so he can open a suicide investigation.”

“A suicide investigation? Why on earth would they investigate a suicide?”

“Believe it or not, suicide is a felony in the state of Texas. The detective would have to investigate to make sure that she killed herself, instead of someone else killing her. Once he did that, he would go before the court and present his findings and have the judge dismiss the charges against the deceased. It’s a bizarre formality, but necessary to keep all the court records in order.”

“Well, it’s all irrelevant. She wasn’t the kind of woman who’d kill herself. She worshipped her sons and knew what it would do to them if she did.”

“I’m sure you’re right. But they have to go through the motions anyway. Now, if the doctor is convinced it was natural causes, the body will be taken to a local funeral home. Do you have a preference?”

“I… don’t know. The ones who buried his father, I suppose. Memorial Gardens. I’m not officially a member of the family, so I can’t say for sure. But that would be my guess.”

“If he chooses not to send her for autopsy I’ll have them take her to Memorial Gardens. If the family decides to make other arrangements, they can transfer her later on.”

The screen door opened and closed again.
